At present, there are approximately 14 each M578 in various configurations. The M578 vehicles were manufactured by Bowen McLaughlin York, USA, and procured in Canada by CDN DND in 1968. They were upgraded and refurbished by Letter Kenny USA, in 1996.
The chassis is made of aluminum alloy and the cab is in light armored steel. The power pack engines, 8V71T Detroit Diesel, have been upgraded to Model No. 7083-7395 440 HP - 5% deviation. The transmissions have been upgraded with Allison Model XTG411-4 modified with second gear steer. The tracks have been changed with the DIEHL P/N 7-109-01-00.1.1 and the sprockets wheels are DIEHL P/N 14527.
